DURATION: 1 Week
ROLE: UX/UI Designer
PROJECT INFO: This was my technical task for a junior product designer role.
PROJECT GOAL: My task is to propose a feature and/or improvements to help this app increase DAU.
TOOLS: Figma
PLATFORM: iOS App
THE PROBLEM
iOS Health app mostly aggregate data from different apps & shows the overall summary, so users check this summary from time to time.
My task is to propose a feature and/or improvements to help this app increase DAU.
How might we increase the daily active users for Health App?
RESEARCH
About the Health App
 - it organises and accesses your important health information.
 - consolidates data from your iPhone, Apple Watch and third-party apps you already use (you can view all your progress in one convenient place).
 - uses machine learning to determine the things that matter most to you.
 - manage your sleep schedule.
 - with the accelerometer, gyroscope and GPS, both Apple Watch and iPhone can track things like workouts, steps and all-day activity.
My research focuses on understanding user behaviours, needs, and motivations through observation and feedback. The goal of user experience research is to prioritise the user and also I want to make sure business needs are met.

I want to know why users are having bad experiences with Health App and how we can improve it. I decided to focus on a smaller number of users and understand their needs in greater detail.

Conduct user interview
The key to empathising with users is to make sure we interview a representative sample that includes the target user group.
My target user group are:
 - people between 30-60 years old.
 - people who are active more than once a week.
 - people who use Health App from time to time.
 - people who use apps and devices to track their activity and health.
To start off I need to determine interview goals, write interview questions, identify and reach out to target participants.
Determine interview goals
I want to ensure that the interviews I conduct are worthwhile, both for me and for the participants. I need to determine clear goals for the interview. Are there certain user problems or pain points that I need to empathise with?

I conducted interviews with 5 participants ( two males, two females and one nonbinary individual). I choose the participants from my personal network and they represent the target user group.

I wanted to:
 - identify common user behaviours, experiences and motivations.
 - understand user needs and frustrations

To have a clear vision about Health App users I created a user persona “Maria”
Define problem statement
To design a solution that fits the needs of Health App users we have to understand the problem from their point of view.

Problem statements provide clarity about users’ goals and help me and my to identify constraints that prevent users from meeting those goals.
Problem statement
“ Maria is an active person who needs an easy app experience where she can track all her daily activities and she can define the goals that she can follow because she wants her workouts to be efficient to improve her health.”
Hypothesis statement
“If Maria uses the Health App for tracking her daily activities and defines the goals that she can follow - her workouts will be more efficient and she will improve her health.“
If we expect that Maria and users like her will engage the most with Health App, we should make the app clear and easy for them to understand and give them the information that they need.
COMPETITORS
Knowing the successes and failures of Health App competition can help inform us about the design process, solve usability problems, and can reveal gaps in the market. We come up with successful design ideas if we have a deep understanding of business needs and market gaps.
Competitive audit goal
My competitive audit goal was to compare the features of Health’s App and quality with its competitors apps.
Who are our key competitors?
Google Fit - is a health tracking platform, helps you achieve a healthier and more active life. It is available for Android and iOS and you can connect it with the Health App.

Samsung Health - help you manage your health. It is available for Android and iOS and you can connect it with the Health App.

What does Apple Health competition do well and what they could do better
Things Google Fit does well include:
 - it has a feature to set your daily and weekly goals.
 - it has a feature to let you know how well you are doing and prompt you to move more if you are close to reaching your goals.
 - it has an audio feature that announces when you are walking, running, cycling you hit a mile.

Things Google Fit could do better include:
 - more recommendations.
 - a social platform.

Things Samsung Health does well include:
 - it has a feature to connect your app with your friends and participate in events.
 - it has a goal widget with data for steps, sleep, calories info with a remaining goal.
Things Samsung Health could do better include:
 - more personalisation.
 - more features.

DESIGN
How might we design the solution for our problem?
It's important to explore multiple design ideas before settling on one solution. The ideas I generated came directly from the research insights.
 - social platform feature
 - setting goals feature
 - personalisation feature
 - audio feature
 - recommendations
 - notification
Having in mind the business needs and the user's needs, I decided to prioritise the features from the initial ideas.

Our new Health App will have a clear onboarding and navigation about what Health App offers, personalised chat bot, setting goals and medication features and get notifications when you hit your daily and weekly activity goals.
Users need a good reason to come back. New Health app can offer:
 - a feature where users can track what they are interested in and set their own goals (daily/weekly). From our persona Maria I have learned that there are users who are taking medication daily to keep their health in balance. Sometimes the best ideas come from things that we never thought (people who are taking daily medications were not my target user group).

My solution is a medication card and a reminder for pills - we can notify users to take their pills. I tried to make this as clear as possible and give users the choices they need without pushing them to allow notifications if they were not sure yet. A setting goal/medication feature can increase DAU.

 - a clear onboarding and navigation about what Health App offers and a personalised bot chat for activity health recommendations which will help users to have a better understanding about what they should do to improve their health can increase DAU and also bring new users who need a nudge to start to improve their life.
What could I improve if I had more time
Deep dive into ‘My Health’ - this could have interesting features such as ’Doctor appointments’, also performing Usability tests to understand how real users interact with my design.
Don't need to reinvent the wheel
There are so many well-known UI patterns (such as cards, profiles, "add" buttons), it's not always feasible or practical to create a new component when my justification is just because the UI looks 'nicer'.
Detachment from my own bias
Understanding how to analyse and use research to put myself in the user’s shoes. This lets me validate or reject my own assumptions, and turn feedback into opportunities. If I didn’t do this, I would not have thought of or known that adding setting goals features is what users want.
